Sept. 16, 2014 - PRLog -- CALABASAS, Calif. —  We’ve all suffered from bad breath at one point in our lives, but with a little bit of extra effort, we can keep our mouths smelling minty fresh all day long.

Unless you suffer from chronic bad breath requiring a clinical treatment, everyday bad breath is caused by a variety of foods, medications and personal habits.

Dr. Greg Rubin, a leading dental professional and the founder of the Calabasas Dental Institute, says the body has natural defenses of keeping bacteria in check, but sometimes those defenses are not enough to effectively control and limit the buildup of bacteria.

Throughout their life cycle, bacteria release toxins, which create that foul smell. Dr. Rubin says bacteria thrive on proteins, such as chicken, fish or milk. But you don’t have to stop eating your favorite breakfast cereal with milk.

“All you have to do is boost your oral hygiene,” he said.

And that means every time you eat a meal with protein, make sure to brush, floss and rinse with a diluted mixture of water and hydrogen peroxide.

On the other hand, there are some foods that bacteria don’t like such as vegetables.

“Bacteria are not attracted to leafy greens and other vegetables so salads are a great thing to eat if you have an important meeting after lunch,” Dr. Greg Rubin said.

Other foods that help increase production of saliva, which helps control the buildup of bacteria and act as natural cleansers include cucumbers, celery, apples and carrots.

Alcohol can also cause bad breath because of its harsh drying effect on mucous membranes in the mouth. Dr. Greg Rubin says a dry mouth is an unhealthy mouth. Without the protection of saliva, bacteria can multiply quickly and cause a foul odor in your mouth.

“If you do have an alcoholic beverage, drink an 8 ounce glass of water afterwards,” Dr. Rubin said. “It will help rehydrate dry tissue and prevent bad breath.”
