WATLINGTON, U.K. - Sept. 12, 2014 - PRLog -- Renowned Canadian Arctic cruise operator, One Ocean Expeditions, is delighted to announce that one of Sir John Franklin’s fabled lost vessels has been found just off King William Island in the Northwest Passage.  For the past two weeks the One Ocean Voyager/ Akademik Sergey Vavilov, one of the company’s expedition cruise ships that was offered to the Royal Canadian Geographic Society for the Victoria Strait Expedition, has been cruising the glacial waters with three other research ships operated by search partners.

The One Ocean Voyager was carrying Parks Canada’s ROV (remote operated vehicle) and their AUV (autonomous underwater vehicle). The AUV has a state-of-the-art sonar system that was deployed in order to scan the seabed in search of the Franklin vessel and was key in this incredible discovery.  It is too early to tell which one of the two vessels, the Erebus or the Terror, has been found.  All we know is that it has been resting on the ocean floor for over 160 years.

“This great moment showcases the tremendous spirit of partnership and Canadian innovation invested in this epic search.  It completes an important chapter in our history and solves one of the biggest mysteries in any polar region. We at One Ocean Expeditions, are very proud to be a part of an event that will re-define our history”, says Andrew Prossin, Managing Director at One Ocean Expeditions.

British archeologist, William Battersby, who has written extensively about Franklin’s Expeditions, describes this find as “the biggest archaeological discovery the world has seen since the opening of Tutankhamun’s tomb almost 100 years ago”.

The Northwest Passage itinerary has always been a best seller for international passengers travelling with polar expedition cruise company, One Ocean Expeditions. With this new development, there will undoubtedly be an increase in consumer awareness and interest in the region.  One Ocean Expeditions will operate an expanded Arctic Canada program for future seasons, including summer 2015.

Among others from around the world, a senior descendant of Sir John Franklin congratulated One Ocean Expeditions and its partners for this emotionally charged achievement. “We are overwhelmed by the congratulations that are coming in from around the globe.  We are confident this will generate a strong interest for Arctic cruising and the Northern communities”, says Prossin.
