Follow on Google News | New book by Bristol artist Julian QuayeA collection of latest works from Bristol artist Julian Quaye with the story behind the pictures
By: Julian Quaye Conflicts, power struggles and unexplained misadventures abound. ‘It is a story set in the world of Albion which has it’s own mythology, politics and laws.’ explains the Bristol artist. ‘People will find echos of the miners strike, a government trying to control an increasingly rebellious populus - think 1984 meets Wind in the Willows with a smattering of James Ellroy playing out as an old movie’ continues Quaye. This is the collection of his mixed media on canvas paintings over the last two and a half years. Two of his first pieces ‘Mr Snuggles is Straight Outta Collumpton’ and his iconic ‘The Aviator’ sold at Dreweatts within the first six months. ‘As I continued painting I discovered the characters and their back story’ says Quaye. ‘It always starts with the paintings.’ When asked what his plans are for the collection he says: ‘I see it as a book and possibly an animated film at the end but we are at the early stages. This is my first collection of character profiles which have been popular with followers of my work. Each character has a contribution to make to the much bigger story’. ‘We are just ironing out the kinks of this publication containing the profiles of the first characters and it will be ready on a print to order basis later in the autumn. If people like it then I’ll look at doing a larger limited edition print run next year.’ You can see the on line version here http://issuu.com/ For more about Julian Quaye’s work see www.julianquaye.co.uk End
