Multiple Sclerosis Coalition Releases Consensus on Treatment

New paper sets the standard for treatment of multiple sclerosis with drug therapy

CHERRY HILL, N.J. - Sept. 9, 2014 - PRLog -- The Multiple Sclerosis Coalition (MSC) released a consensus paper, The Use of Disease Modifying Therapies in Multiple Sclerosis: Principles and Current Evidence. Drafted by experts from the MSC’s member organizations and reviewed by independent professionals in the field, the consensus paper sets the ‘gold standard’ for treatment of MS with disease-modifying drug therapies. The paper addresses both treatment protocols and issues of access to care, making it a useful guide for clinicians, managed care organizations and insurers, and people diagnosed with MS.

The development of this ground-breaking paper is a step forward in the MSC’s mission “to increase opportunities for cooperation and provide greater opportunity to leverage the effective use of resources for the benefit of the MS community.” The final paper was endorsed by all eight member organizations, and subsequently endorsed by Americas Committee for Treatment and Research in Multiple Sclerosis (ACTRIMS). It will be distributed at the joint meeting of ACTRIMS and ECTRIMS (the European sister organization), September 10 – 13, 2014 in Boston, Mass., and is currently available on the Multiple Sclerosis Coalition website.

“Treatment of MS is complex, and the choice of a therapy may depend on several variables” says MSC President Doug Franklin. “This consensus paper will aid physicians and their MS patients in the decision-making process. Our hope is also that it will be useful for healthcare insurers and managed care organizations by demonstrating the need for access to the full range of available options for the treatment of this complicated and highly individualized condition.”

Member organizations of the MS Coalition are: Accelerated Cure Project, the Consortium of MS Centers, Can Do Multiple Sclerosis, the International Organization of MS Nurses, Multiple Sclerosis Association of America, Multiple Sclerosis Foundation, National Multiple Sclerosis Society, and United Spinal Association
