“The Crew Goes Coconuts!” picture book is volume six of best selling author Carole Roman’s “Captain No Beard” series. The crew is short of water and thirsty. They drop anchor on a remote, deserted island and search for liquid. The blame game begins- bullying. “Coconuts!” is a fun, fascinating and educational story inner-woven with bullying examples and what Captain No Beard did to stop his crew from bullying.

Roman’s first “Captain No Beard: An Imaginary Tale of a Pirates Life” picture book finds young Alexander sitting on his bed with his three stuffed animals and his cousin Hallie. His creative imagination zooms to new heights. Alexander now is Captain No Beard and cousin Hallie is his First Mate. Alexander’s stuffed animals become Linus the lion, Mongo the monkey, and Fribbet the frog. All embark from an island on the Flying Dragon frigate to sail the seven seas in search of treasure.

“Captain No Beard” was a Kirkus “Star of Merit” winner and received a Kirkus Reviews’ “Best of 2012” award. This picture book also won a Pinnacle Book Achievement award.

Children Learn the Effects of Bullying

“The Crew Goes Coconuts!” picture book, in addition to an absorbing story-line for children, illustrates the negative aspects of bullying. The crew drank all of their juice and are now searching for water on a lonely island. Mongo the monkey and Polly Parrot put the blame for no water on Matie the goat. The story shows how bullying can affect others and endanger  friendships.

How to Stop Bullying

While the realistic color illustrations and understandable words grab the imagination of children, and they  will also learn a lesson about the advantages of not bullying. Readers will understand the rewards of respecting other people. Captain No Beard uses an effective method to stop the bullying among his crew. He asked two simple questions and explained to his crew the truth of their answers. The bullying stopped and now the crew were better able to solve their thirst problem.
