Follow on Google News | City Adds NLRWorms To “seed Chicago” ProgramBy: Nature's Little Recyclers The program is a unique interface of community organizations, the City government, and the KickStarter crowd-funding platform, which has funded tens of thousands of creative projects since its launch in 2009. This collaboration enables worthwhile projects in the city, identified by Accion Chicago and other organizations, to achieve funding outside of the typical tax or foundation sources, using the power of the internet to find individuals wanting to help. Nature's Little Recyclers is a green-tech project that has developed new systems for growing worms in an urban factory setting. Worms consume up to half their weight in organic waste per day, and they're fed coffee grounds and chaff, spent grain from breweries, cardboard and office waste paper, and other items that would otherwise be heading for landfills. Operating in the Back of the Yards neighborhood, they're looking to expand to be able to process more waste, and produce more high-quality compost for the city's urban gardening ventures.
