MoBiTec Offers Clickable Isoprenoids Manufactured by Echelon Biosciences
isoprenoids are organic compounds composed of two or more units of hydrocarbons, with each unit consisting of five carbon atoms arranged in a specific pattern. Isoprenoids play widely varying roles in physiological processes of plants and animals.
In the 1980s scientists discovered that proteins in animals often have isoprenoid structures containing 15 or 20 carbon atoms attached to a particular side chain of the protein. The isoprenoid is added after the protein is otherwise complete. The so-called prenylated proteins do not function without the isoprenoid. These modifications occur in proteins that induce cancers, and scientists believe that drugs that block protein prenylation can be a means to prevent the spread of the disease in an individual.
Steroids, a class of compounds of great importance in both plants and animals, are not isoprenoids but are derived directly from them.
The new Clickable Isoprenoids represent exclusive tools for isoprenoid research.
Click chemistry was first introduced by K. Berry Sharpless in 2001. It describes a chemical reaction which builds substances by joining small units together. Click-reactions are fast and purposeful with high yields.
The alkyne-modified isoprenoids were developed by the Distefano group at the University of Minnesota as chemical reporters of protein prenylation. The isoprenoids readily penetrate mammalian cells and are used as substrates by prenyltransferases. The pendant alkyne can be derivatized with an azide-containing tag, such as a fluorophore or biotin, via a Cu(I) catalyzed “Click” reaction allowing the prenylated proteins to be identified and quantified.
MoBiTec offers Propargyl-geraniol (Catalog No.: S-0110) and Propargyl-farnesol (Catalog No.: S-0160) manufactured by Echelon Biosciences, USA, to its customers throughtout Europe.
Echelon Biosciences Incorporated (EBI) was incorporated under the laws of the state of Utah as Echelon Research Laboratories, Inc. on October 3, 1997. Initially, EBI was formed from a project under the Center for Cell Signaling, a State of Utah Center of Excellence, with the aim to further the science of lipid cell signaling and critical metabolic enzymes, which provide new and viable targets for the development of potential drugs and diagnostics for cancer, diabetes, inflammation, infections, and cardiovascular disease.
MoBiTec GmbH (Goettingen, Germany) is a privately held company (founded in 1987) that offers research tools for molecular and cell biology. Products include DNA vectors for cloning and expression, cell transfection reagents and cell culture tools, immobilized and soluble enzymes, products for genomics and proteomics research, numerous antibodies and recombinant proteins, superior fluorescence reagents and kits, affinity chromatography products, as well as general laboratory equipment.
In parallel to its own product lines, MoBiTec distributes products from international companies in Germany. MoBiTec products are distributed worldwide, in Germany from their home office, in other countries by distributors.
