Aug. 27, 2014 - PRLog -- CALABASAS, Calif. — The Calabasas Dental Institute will soon be offering a third sedation option.

Dr. Greg Rubin, who has more than thirty years’ experience in the dental field, says his first priority is making sure his patient feel as comfortable as possible during procedures.

“I believe sedation will help some patients overcome the fear of pain they have with going to the dentist and will make their experience a more pleasant one,” Dr. Greg Rubin said.

He says many people fear the dentist’s office and therefore, tend to delay getting regular but necessary checkups, which could lead to more severe oral problems. But thanks to modern sedation, Dr. Rubin says patients can rest assured they won’t feel any pain.

“Unfortunately, there is a stigma attached with dentistry and there doesn’t have to be,” Dr. Greg Rubin said.

Currently, the office offers two sedation options: nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, and Oral Conscious sedation.

Nitrous Oxide helps patients feel relaxed during short, routine procedures. It is known as "laughing gas" due to the euphoric effects when inhaled.

The second is Oral Conscious sedation. This involves patients taking a sedative about an hour before a procedure, generally to reduce patients fear and anxiety related to the experience. The patients are awake during the procedure but do not feel any pain.

The sedative effect allows more dentistry to be completed in fewer appointments as well as allowing complex procedures to be performed in less time.

Drugs which can be used for this type of sedation include diazepam, triazolam, zaleplon, lorazepam, and hydroxyzine.

The new option will be an IV Sedation, which will be administered by a licensed MD anesthesiologist.

This involves sedatives that are administered intravenously and patients are deeply sedated and don’t remember the procedure after they wake up.
