OAKLAND, Calif. - Aug. 27, 2014 - PRLog -- AAPC Publishing Releases New Book That Helps Support Children’s Social And Emotional Competence

AAPC Publishing and author, Elizabeth A. Sautter, MA CCC-SLP, are pleased to announce the release of their new book, Make Social Learning Stick!: How to Guide and Nurture Social Competence Through Everyday Routines and Activities. Make Social Learning Stick! is a user-friendly guide written for parents, caregivers, teachers, and therapists  who want to support children’s social and emotional competence.

Many books provide a global view, or the “whys,” of social and emotional development. The ideas and suggestions offered in this book are more about the “whats” and “how-to’s”—what to do in the moment and how to make the moment teachable! The activities presented offer strategies that have worked for other families, and will help readers create engaging ideas to suit their unique child and family.

This book doesn’t ask parents to do extra work, but rather to use their daily routines to influence and increase social learning. It offers a “social learning diet” of concepts and actions that can be used in everyday life to increase verbal and nonverbal language, listening skills, understanding of hidden rules, perspective taking, executive functioning, and more. Children need consistent exposure to social examples and explanations, as well as practice throughout the day to gradually understand these concepts. The activities provided in this book are recipes for social and emotional learning for which parents, teachers, and therapists already have the ingredients. The goal is to help readers become more mindful and intentional about how they put these ingredients together to facilitate learning.

With over 185 fun and easy activities, including contributions from leading experts, this book offers numerous ways to embrace teachable moments throughout daily routines. Events like getting ready for school, preparing dinner, going to the doctor, and celebrating Thanksgiving become opportunities for teaching and reinforcing expected social behavior. Geared toward children in preschool through elementary school, the ideas are meant to inspire creativity that suits each specific child. Activities can be easily tailored to meet a child’s developmental level, needs, or challenges. Teachers and therapists can also select activities from the book to share with caregivers and family members who may be seeking functional ways to practice social skills at home. to the book aims to make social learning stick through fun and memorable interactions. As the reader incorporates the activities into everyday life, the child will build comfort and skills in social settings, from the dinner table, to the schoolyard, to the greater community.
