SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - Aug. 25, 2014 - PRLog -- Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths and the second most common cancer among both men and women in the United States according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The most important thing a person can do to lower their lung cancer risk is to quit smoking and to avoid secondhand smoke.  After smoking, the second leading cause of lung cancer is radon, a naturally occurring gas that comes from rocks and dirt and can get trapped in houses and buildings. It is an odorless and invisible gas that many people are not even aware could be in their home, school or place of business.

Workers can also be exposed to numerous substances and chemical compounds that could increase their chances of developing lung cancer.  There are many known workplace carcinogens that may be present in dusts or fumes, including, but by no means limited to: asbestos, arsenic, diesel exhaust, and some forms of silica and chromium.   Some of these same hazardous substances may also be present in people’s homes and communities.  For example, asbestos can be found in older homes and diesel exhaust may be a concern in some residential areas near worksites, factories and busy roadways.

“Some people who develop lung cancer just have general symptoms of not feeling well and unfortunately most people with lung cancer don't have symptoms until the cancer is advanced,” said Harry Pena, President of Zimmetry Environmental.  “Due to this fact, lung cancer, especially when the cancer has progressed to an advanced stage, can be difficult to treat and is currently the leading cause of cancer deaths in our nation.”

To help prevent cases of lung cancer, Zimmetry provides air testing and monitoring services to identify numerous airborne carcinogens to protect workers and the public from exposure to these hazardous substances.  Zimmetry also recently sponsored an educational video about lung cancer and airborne contaminants that can be seen at: www.youtube.com/watch?v=yEDAvcHf6pc
