Aug. 25, 2014 - PRLog -- This September and October, flip the switch and turn on The Power of the Pink® by purchasing a pink CFL light bulb at one of over 400 participating Walmart stores, and light up your home or business in pink to show your support for breast cancer awareness and research.  This year marks the fifth year for the Power of the Pink program which has raised an approximate total of $600,000 for local breast health initiatives throughout the region.  The 2014 goal is being set at $175,000 in charitable contributions.

Power of the Pink, established in St. Louis, Missouri in 2009, is a growing platform that provides free mammography exams to uninsured and underinsured women who meet certain criteria.  Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women and mammograms are the best way to find breast cancer in its earliest, most treatable form. The program organizes onsite Mammography Van Events across the country and has worked hand-in-hand with local Walmart stores to deliver a message of preventative care.

Mammography Vans will be setup on Walmart parking lots in Missouri, Illinois, and Tennessee for pre-scheduled and walk-up appointments for women between the ages of 40 and 64. Events will include product samples and coupons from sponsors, a free pink CFL light bulb, and a $5 Walmart Gift Card for all women that schedule a mammogram. Breast Health Education booths will also be onsite offering women further information and resources regarding breast health.  To see a full schedule of events and locations, and to schedule an appointment for a mammogram, please visit Power of the Pink online at www.PowerofthePink.com.

Walmart is proud to partner with Power of the Pink in bringing mammography vans to their local communities.  “The support surrounding the Power of the Pink program from a community level, as well as our associates’ commitment each year, is astounding.” said Walmart Tennessee Regional General Manager, Shana Bailey-DeSmit.  “The visual of driving through a neighborhood or walking into an office and seeing that they have converted to the pink light bulb to turn people onto the idea of driving awareness for breast cancer, and knowing that we played a role in facilitating that is why we support this program.”

Power of the Pink is made possible by Bimbo Bakeries, General Mills, Heineken, Johnson & Johnson, Kellogg’s, Kraft, Nabisco/Mondelēz, Pepperidge Farm, Prairie Farms/Hiland Dairy, Prestige Brands, Red Bull, Tabasco, and Walmart.
