Parents with young children face ‘holiday prejudice’
• Baby-Friendly Boltholes says young families feel segregated • Industry could be boosted by embracing the family market
Founder Sian Williams says families often get a rough deal from hotels, airlines and other holidaymakers – and it’s time attitudes towards them changed.
“Travelling with young children is never easy, as any parent knows, but it is made doubly worse when you are made to feel like a second-class citizen, even in first class,” says Williams, who set up Baby-Friendly Boltholes to help young parents find places to stay that are both hip and helpful.
“A recent survey by Latedeals.co.uk showed 70% of travellers want child-free zones on aircraft, and a third of people would pay extra to go on a child-free flight.
“That shows that British travellers are pretty intolerant when it comes to babies and toddlers on flights, while many so-called luxury hotels simply don’t cater to the needs of young families and are increasingly pandering to empty nesters.
“Not only is this an indication of prejudice, but also a huge missed opportunity in terms of increasing profitability by extending business outside of peak school holiday dates.
“Without exception, the hotels, villas and cottages listed on our website have seen a significant upturn in business by offering supplies and services to make young families more comfortable – so maybe the airlines could learn something from that rather than making them feel they are an inconvenience.”
