Author’s First Novel at 59 Years Old

PETALUMA, Calif. - Aug. 19, 2014 - PRLog -- It took her long enough, but Carol Treacy, longtime Petaluma resident, penned and published her first novel before she hit the big 6-0. Why now?

“Why not?” replied Carol. “This story has been inhabiting my mind for years, just waiting to come out. I finally got my act and conscience together.”

A vegetarian for 21 years and vegan for over 4 years, Carol had a driving desire to expose factory farming and educate omnivores about their food choices. “There are scads of non-fiction vegan books: cookbooks, the how’s and why's of becoming vegan, but so few novels exist where the protagonist is a vegan or the story involves animal rights issues. I believe that most people love animals – I want to break down that emotional barrier that’s been erected between animals we consider pets and those we consider food.”

Vegan Cowboy tells the story of  Rae O'Brien, a single mom in her late fifties raising her teenage son, and Granger Bowden, a third generation cattle rancher who becomes a vegan and converts his ranch into an animal sanctuary. A near tragedy brings Rae and Granger together, changing their perceptions of family, love and aspirations.
