-- 12 August 2014. New Delhi. Wave Kabbadi League, India’s attempt to galvanize the game that has been its identity for long, is drawing support from all sides. The league, which set off on August 8 with aplomb, in the presence of Monty Chadha, Vice Chairman, Wave Group, has managed a lot of public attention as many Bollywood celebrities have joined in, some even as team owners.
The founding principle to this league is promoting the game that has its roots in India globally. The inaugural event was held in London, with Mr. Monty Chadha, among other dignitaries, particularly the cast of the movie, Entertainment.
Kabaddi is nothing short of a great sport and has the potential to go places.
Besides, the youth in India has opened to sports other than cricket as is evident from the success of the Hockey India League.
This has put out a great opportunity to leverage and encourage Kabaddi as India’s mainstream sport. That is the main reason of the coming together of the league which has eight franchisees joining in at the start. With time, this could grow much bigger as the initial excitement is nothing short of building into a phenomenon.
The USP of the league, besides being one of a kind ever to be held, is its international mileage. The schedule runs from August 9, 2014 to December 2014 and spans across international venues, including the likes of Birmingham, Dubai, New York, and Los Angeles.
The first season hosts 86 matches to be played out exclusively on weekends. It will also see a great mix of international and national players who will for the very first time ever, share same teams. Seeing international opponents rub shoulders together in unison is something wonderful for the audience.
There are strict checks in place for keeping an anti-dope environment going. Players and officials will be under watch to help the league build credibility right from the go. The format is parallel to Formula 1, in line with the global reach of the league.
