By: Patricia Zubkin As summer comes to it's end, the conversations in homes are about shoes, clothes, teacher supply lists...all the tangible things about going back to school. However, research shows that intangibles like self esteem and communication are important to success too and that poor skills lead to poor academic performance and increased likelihood of undesirable behavior. That's why Real Beauty Inside Out has an inside out approach to back to school success and is hosting a free fair featuring wellness, beauty, health, image, and success stations with answers to many questions moms and teen girls have Saturday, August 16, at Brookhaven College located at 3939 Valley View Lane, Dallas, TX. Dr. Trevicia Williams will also facilitate her signature mother teen daughter seminar: I Love You, But I Can't Stand You Right Now(TM) to ready moms and teen girls for home and school success by equipping them with effective communication skills. https://www.youtube.com/ The first official day of class is August 25th and with all of the typical shopping that goes on, some of the most valuable things for back to school success are oftentimes not addressed. According to the National Retail Federation (NFR), "families with school-age children would spend an average $634.78 on apparel, shoes, supplies and electronics to get ready for the school year." "Most merchants are prepared for the higher spending projected for this year's back-to-school shopping. However emotional and relationship capital, "the intangibles," Research shows that girls experience a tremendous amount of personal and social pressures. The following shows how these pressures affect the development of their self-esteem: *Eating disorders, low self-esteem, and depression are the most common mental health problems in girls. *59% of 5–12th grade girls in one survey were dissatisfied with their body shape. 20–40% of girls begin dieting at age 10. *By 15, girls are twice as likely to become depressed than boys. *Among 5–12th graders, 47% said they wanted to lose weight because of magazine pictures. *Health risks accompany girls' drop in self-esteem due to risky eating habits, depression, and unwanted pregnancy. *Girls aged 10 and 12 (tweens) are confronted with "teen" issues such as dating and sex, at increasingly earlier ages. 73% of 8–12–year olds dress like teens and talk like teens "The things that children need to be successful is a combination of back-to-school materials as well as intangibles such as love, support, guidance, and effective communication skills," says Williams That's why the intangible things will be the topic of the day Saturday, August 16th in Dallas, Texas, during Williams' signature fun and interactive healthy relationships seminar called: I Love You, But I Can't Stand You Right Now (TM) for mothers and their 10-18 year old daughters. Research shows that moms are the "go to' people in their households. Children tend to turn to them before anyone else for advice and encouragement. So, it's important to know how to start conversations, what to say, how to say it, when to say it and many more dynamics of communicating with tween and teen girls. https://www.youtube.com/ The mother daughter experience back to school event also features a resource fair with the latest in health, wellness, beauty, image and success products, services and information, demonstrations, consultations, drawings, prizes, contests and giveaways!
