5 Secrets to Staying Motivated...Even After Your 100th “No”
Continuously being rejected, failing, and hearing “no” can be life deflating. It takes a toll. It can leave confidence at rock bottom, risk-taking permanently on hold, and goal-setting a forgotten passion.

Anderson, the author of six books, is passionately dedicated to empowering others to stick with goals and “live the life they love.” Besides writing and speaking, Anderson is the Founder of Extra Mile America, an organization which will lead an estimated 500 cities to declare November 1, 2014, as “Extra Mile Day”... a day to recognize the capacity we each have to create positive change in our families, organizations and communities when we go the extra mile.
“No one is exempt from failing and hearing ‘no.’ In fact, anybody who isn’t hearing ‘no’ enough isn’t setting his ambitions very high,” Anderson says. “What I see most, though, are people living disappointed lives not because their initial goals lacked size, but because their commitment to weather the “no” storm does.”
Anderson offers five tips on how we can stay motivated when our results aren’t motivating:
1. Have an unstoppable purpose.
“If we desire a goal with every fiber in our being, we will have the power to get past ‘no,’” Anderson shares. “If our passion is deep enough, when someone whispers the words ‘you can’t’ in our direction, we won’t listen long enough to quit on ourselves.”
2. Screw excuses.
“People who make excuses regarding their performance soon make excuses to stop performing,”
3. You’re the cue ball.
“Striking the white cue ball sends all the other balls on the pool table into motion. Likewise, it’s our action that puts others into action. If we’re not landing enough success, it’s because we’re not striking the cue ball enough.”
4. Sharpen your ax.
“Hearing ‘no’ dulls our confidence and desire. The duller we get, the duller our results become, and the more we will hear ‘no.’ Stay sharp. Exercise daily, read empowering books, and hang out with inspirational people,” Anderson shares.
5. Always go the extra mile.
“If you’re hearing lots of ‘no’ in your life, turn ‘no’ around by going the extra mile and adding more value to your offer or efforts. Value added leads to opportunities opened,” Anderson says.
