NEWBURYPORT, Mass. - Aug. 8, 2014 - PRLog -- Downtown Newburyport plays host to ArtWalk, a free, self-guided walking tour of more than 20 galleries and partner sites in this historic waterfront city next weekend.  Four times each year, the artistic community offers special exhibits, artist discussions, painting demonstrations and live music in a casual reception environment. ArtWalk hours are Saturday, August 16 from 3-7 p.m. and Sunday, August 17 from 1-5 p.m.

Designated as the fifth cultural district on the North Shore by the Massachusetts Cultural Council late last year,  Newburyport has a long history of inspiring artists and craftsmen with its historic architecture,  beautiful beaches,  abundant parks and natural landscapes, and New England heritage. Residents and visitors alike can stop by participating galleries to find new works -- paintings, photographs, sculpture, multimedia, jewelry, antiques and more --  in a wide range of traditional and contemporary styles.

“Newburyport is a fun and easy destination to see a variety of top notch art. Combine the ArtWalk tour with dinner out for a lovely evening out. Meet an artist, be with like-minded patrons, learn something new… it’s a low-key way to discover the art without feeling pressured,” said Valerie Stainton, owner of Valerie’s Gallery and ArtWalk participant.

Paula Estey, owner of Paula Estey Gallery and another advocate of ArtWalk explained: “When we support our local creativity, we are literally supporting the vitality of the town. Wander the galleries and studios, we see new art, meet old friends, and energize your appetite for beauty. It’s like a neighborhood block party right in your own backyard.”

Plan your route with a free brochure/map available at participating galleries, the Newburyport Chamber of Commerce, the passageway between State State and Inn Street and at ArtWalk Partners’ locations.

Some of the special activities planned for the August 16th  and August 17th ArtWalk are:

-- Paula Estey Gallery (PEG): This working studio of Paula Estey  represents six contemporary artists and shows featured artists for two-month slots. There will be a reception for  photographer Jay McCarthy, exhibiting his large format prints, on Saturday night from 6-8 p.m., with a special musical treat by the Chuck Walker Trio and refreshments. On Sunday,  there is a reception from 2-4 p.m. and a talk at 3 p.m. by August Featured Artist Beverly Rippel about her Cap Gun Series.

-- Newburyport Art Association:  Light refreshments will be served in the gallery with three exhibitions on view: Eight Cubed: a members open show featuring more than 180 8” x 8” canvases; Raw Arts “Sense of Place” a special collaboration with renowned landscape painter Donald Jurney and students at Raw Art Works in Lynn, MA;  and a group show by Band of Brushes.
