NEW YORK - Aug. 7, 2014 - PRLog -- The latest work by Giles Lury entitled, The Prisoner & The Penguin: And 75 other modern marketing stories, has been launched in the U.S.  Mr. Lury is the Executive Chairman of The Value Engineers (, a global brand consultancy with offices in London and New York.  The book is being published by LID Publishing, Ltd.

“The notion of combining brands and storytelling is not a new one. There has been an awful lot written about it: mostly about the theory of storytelling and how you should go about doing it,” states Lury, “so rather than add to the theory, I have written a grown-up storybook for marketers.”

The Prisoner & The Penguin contains 76 stories about some of the world’s most famous brands, such as Nike, Disney, Google, Volkswagen, Virgin and Wrigley.

The book tells the stories about…

Why a prisoner asked for a penguin

How a spelling mistake led to the creation of one of the world’s most famous brand names

How saying No to a pitch won a new agency a new account

The stories are about branding, innovation, strategy and/or communication, and following in the tradition of Aesop, each story concludes with a short moral.

Early reviews have been unanimously positive.

Giles’ observations are interesting, precise, assertive, and funny yet still leave a lot for your own imagination to fill, just as any good story should.” Marcelo Amstalden Möller: Head of Global CMI – Innovation & Global Brands Heineken B.V.

A fascinating piece of brand archaeology and storytelling with morals that are powerful and relevant today” Guy Grimsley: Global Insight Manager AkzoNobel

The wonderful thing about Giles’ brand stories is that it doesn’t matter whether or not they are true, altered, exaggerated or amended – what makes them so powerful is the intrigue and surprise.  On reading the ‘stories’ I felt I was being educated about the true meaning of brands and entertained at the same time.”  Katy Mousinho: Head of Insight & Customer Experience Thomas Cook

Strong brands increasingly reflect strong cultures that are enriched and empowered by the stories they tell. This is a unique and bite-size collection of some of the best stories told by a great storyteller” Stephen Meade : CEO McCann Enterprise

The Prisoner & The Penguin is available in paperback. It is available for purchase at, Barnes and Noble and  In addition, to complement the publication, a companion website, has been launched.
