August 26th Will Mark the 50th Anniversary of the Delray Beach Historical Society Charter Signing
The town of Delray Beach is invited to an Open House and Birthday Celebration on August 26th, 2014 in courtyard of the Delray Beach Historical Society. Pineapple cake and punch will be served to commemorate the Historical Society’s charter signing
The event starts at 5:30 pm and the first 100 guests will receive a Gladiola flower as a memento. Gladiolus flower farms were big business in Delray Beach starting in 1939. Delray Beach was second in Florida Gladiolus production, shipping out more than 2 million dozen per year nationwide. Long before the Delray Affair came to dominate East Atlantic Avenue with its displays of arts and crafts, the Gladiola Festival had a successful eight-year run from 1947 through 1953 as Palm Beach County's feature attraction.
The Gladiola flower remains an iconic and historic symbol of Delray Beach, along with the Pineapple.
