FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. - Aug. 5, 2014 - PRLog -- The Holocaust Memorial Center Zekelman Family Campus (www.holocaustcenter.org) announced that it is teaming up with four Oakland County libraries to present an educational and interactive program for youths.

Families and people of all ages are invited to attend the events taking place at the Oak Park Library (Aug. 28), Farmington Community Library (Sept. 15), Pontiac Public Library (Sept. 16) and Novi Public Library (Sept. 18).

A local Holocaust survivor will be among the speakers for this age-appropriate introduction to the Holocaust that will emphasize important concepts such as the inherent value of each individual, the need to stand up for the rights of others, and the imperative of helping those in need.  The program also will include a discussion on Anne Frank’s diary and exploration into the issues Anne faced at that time and how they compare in today’s world.

Children, ages 10-15, can take part in a hands-on project whereby they decorate a door that opens up to a photo of themselves and their handwritten answers to the questions: If you could walk through a door without fear, where would you go?  Where would it lead you?  What obstacles are in the way of getting there?

The goal of the exercise is to help confront some of the same issues Anne Frank faced (e.g., identity; being a teen; dealing with parents; hope versus despair; bravery; responsibility to standup for what’s right and to fight discrimination and bullying).  All children participating in this art project will receive a copy of The Diary of Anne Frank and a special gift from the Holocaust Memorial Center.

The Phillip and Elizabeth Filmer Memorial Charitable Trust is the generous supporter of the Anne Frank Educational Program and Art Project.

About the Holocaust Memorial Center Zekelman Family Campus

The Holocaust Memorial Center Zekelman Family Campus opened in 1984.  Local Holocaust survivors, with community support, founded the museum to teach about the senseless murder of millions, and why everyone must respect and stand up for the rights of others if the world is to prevent future discrimination, hate crime and genocide. As Michigan’s only Holocaust museum, the Holocaust Memorial Center annually touches the lives of more than 85,000 individuals, who leave the museum profoundly affected with a newly acquired sense of history, social responsibility and morality. The Holocaust Memorial Center’s exhibits create a call to action, teaching visitors through the examples of those who risked their lives to save others, and asking its guests to react to contemporary challenges such as racism, intolerance, bullying and prejudice.

The facility is wheelchair accessible and free parking is available at both the North and South entrances.
