-- IIHS statistics show that over eighty percent of parents purchase a used car for their teen daughter or son due to budget restraints. As a result the IIHS has released a list of safe used cars recommended for teens. Picks include the Honda Accord sedan (2012 and later), Acura RL (2005 and later) and Nissan Rogue (2008 later). The IIHS recommends vehicles with ESC (electronic stability control), a feature which helps the driver maintain control during critical moments. Experts say that ESC is just as crucial as air bags. Side air bags are another important consideration.
Other important features to look for in a used car include solid head restraints and a strong roof to offer protection during a rollover crash. Rollover protection and roof strength is extra important if you are considering a used SUV or truck since those are more likely to rollover than regular sedans. All of the cars who made the list are midsize sedans and small SUV's; there are no compact autos on the list. Sedans and smaller SUV's offer more mass and protection during crashes compared to compact vehicles. Experts recommend that parents avoid sports cars since those may encourage teens to drive faster.
