World ‘first’ technically advanced satellite debuts at Farnborough

Alphasat one of the most technologically advanced telecommunications satellites ever constructed for civilian application is being showcased by Airbus Defence and Space at Farnborough 2014.

AYLESBURY, U.K. - July 16, 2014 - PRLog -- Alphasat provides coverage over Europe, the Middle East and Africa for operation Immarsat and strengthens its existing 1-4 series satellite constellation, whose three satellites were also built by Airbus Defence and Space.

Also on display is a model of the comet chasing spacecraft Rosetta, whose ten year journey to comet 67P reaches a key milestone in August when in goes into orbit and then in November when it will deploy a lander to study the nucleus. In addition, a model of the Sentinel 5 Precursor Earth observation satellite will highlight Airbus Defence and Space’s key role in the European Copermicus programme. Sentinel 5 Precursor is due to be launched in 2016.

Airbus Defence and Space is part of the Airbus Group and was formed in January this year by combining the business activities of Cassidian, Astrium and Airbus Military.

The new division is Europe’s number one defence and space enterprise, the second largest space business worldwide and among the top ten global defence enterprises. Its employs some 40,000 employees generating revenues of 14 billion Euros a year.
