Remodel transforms Leucadia property into a tropical paradise

The aloha spirit wafts blithely through ginger and banana leaves in Barb and Bill Probert’s tropical paradise. Aloha means “the joyful sharing of life energy in the present.”

Inspired by a love of Kauai, three years ago the couple took a termite-infested home on an old avocado grove in Leucadia and transformed it into a Hawaiian plantation house. It is their third home since they married in 1987. They hope it will be their last.

“We were in our 60s at the time and wanted the home to be one story,” Bill recalled. “Then we saw the ocean view and decided to add a second floor.”

Allan Teta (TRE architecture) was tapped to design the 3,400-square-foot remodel.

“We went in with a storyboard of personal photos from Hawaii and others from magazines,” Bill said. “Allan got right with our vision.”

The floor plan for the first floor included a dining room with a wine room, expansive kitchen and great room with a slider that opens to the large outdoor seating area, lanai and guesthouse. There is also a media room and two bedrooms. The second floor has a home office and master suite with an outdoor deck and pass-through between the walk-in closet and laundry room...
