Iridium's Mobile Satcom Offering Approved by Maritime Agency

July 9, 2014 - PRLog -- Iridium's application to offer satellite communication services through a public safety system has been approved by an International Maritime Organization subcommittee.

The company has built shipboard terminals that are designed to operate up to 20 years and help vessel operators transmit data and voice communications.

“The overwhelming support for our application to provide the industry an alternative and equally capable option for GMDSS services is a testament to the value and benefit the Iridium network can provide to maritime safety,” said Matt Desch, CEO of Iridium.

Iridium says the terminals will be ready before the end of 2015.

Desch added that the terminals will be of particular use in the polar region and will take advantage of the company's 66 low-Earth orbit satellites.
