NAMSR News- Gastrointestinal breakthrough in imaging and testing
Breakthrough in gastrointestinal imaging creates real-time results with the development of ‘nanojuice’
Researchers used what they refer to as “nanojuice”
"Conventional imaging methods show the organ and blockages, but this method allows you to see how the small intestine operates in real time," said University of Buffalo biomedical engineering professor Jonathan Lovell, and co-author of theNature Nanotechnology article describing the findings. "Better imaging will improve our understanding of these diseases and allow doctors to more effectively care for people suffering from them," he explained in the news release.
While the team has only administered the nanojuice in mice, it plans on making improvements to the imaging methods and moving onto human trials. In the future researchers hope to use the method to map other areas of the 20-plus feet of gastrointestinal tract located between the stomach and large intestine.
Researchers have made the dyes user friendly and are safe for human consumption;
