The Funk of July! Sol Roots at Dogtown Roadhouse in Floyd VA performing funk, soul, rock, and blues
On Friday July 4, Dogtown Roadhouse in Floyd VA presents touring artist Sol Roots, with members of The Alliens/ The Color J and The Floorboards all joining forces to create a serious funk throwdown of fiery musical fireworks called The Funk of July!
Sol Roots is a fierce guitarist and soulful singer who has toured the world with many roots, funk, and blues legends. Sol and his band create a unique blend of energetic rock, gritty blues, jazz, and raw funk, all delivered with deep soul. Sol Roots has toured across the east coast U.S. at many premier festivals and venues and have been on bills with Jon Cleary, Soulive, The Wood Brothers, Robert Randolph, Jackie Greene, Eric Lindell, Walter “Wolfman" Washington and more.
Sol has performed on stage and in the studio with musical heavyweights Taj Mahal, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, and with the international guitar hero Cool John Ferguson, who he performed with steadily for years. Sol has soaked in much from funk, blues, jazz, and soul heroes such as Roy Lee Johnson, Albert White, and Robert Lee Coleman, while touring and gigging with these artists. Sol also created a buzz with his underground blues hip-hop album entitled “Volume: Blue," that carried him overseas to perform these sets live.
With a love of Universal Music as the guiding light, Sol steps out on a path with a unique and talented band of musicians.
The Floorboards are an Appalachian roots rock ensemble hailing from the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. The band marries rock & roll and country roots with the sights and sounds of southern mountain towns. Jake and George shake the leaves from the trees. Bob wails like a steam whistle cutting through the pines. Chris coaxes stringed cries from the hills and hollers. Matt tells the story. The Floorboards have quickly become a staple in the Southeast and are branching out with purpose. Having co-billed with bands such as Trampled By Turtles, Yarn, Big Daddy Love, Royal Southern Brotherhood, Laura Reed, and performed at venues and festivals in the southeast along side Drive by Truckers, Jackson Brown, Matisyahu, Allison Krause and Union Station, the band is picking up steam like the 611 (A 110 mph steam engine born in the Blue Ridge)!
The Color J
Brothers Jamiel & Janiah Allen (co-founders of ALLiENS) alongside with John Hill (co-founder of The Materia Project) come together to create a band based on originality and creative expression. This funky group uses their vocal harmonies and musicianship as a linchpin to their composition. Steamy tracks infused with cross-cultural blends of rock, funk, and hip hop cultivate an undeniably danceable vibe.
On Friday July 4th there will be an admission charge for The Funk of July concert. Sol Roots and The Floorboards are both Home Grown Music Network bands.
