Supreme Court EPA Ruling Could Impact Power Prices National Energy Marketer Reports
The court held that the Environmental Protection Agency may regulate the greenhouse gas emissions of any suppliers that are already required to receive a permit under the Clean Air Act.
Although a huge win for the EPA, this may not be good news for retail energy customers. These new rules could result in a backdoor energy tax that would drive up energy bills for American households and businesses. As coal-fired generation is reduced, there will be higher demand for natural gas which will increase prices for home heating, as well as electricity. With growing demands on natural gas and Shale gas production, additional resources are being strained to keep up with rising energy costs.
“As electricity prices rise, budgets will be affected and customers will have to offset their expenses with cost cuts like layoffs,” said Joseph Casey, Chief Operating Officer for national marketer U.S. Gas & Electric. “We offer our customers fixed price products like fixed rate mortgages that will help manage price volatility."
U.S. Gas & Electric is one of the largest electricity suppliers to homeowners and businesses in the northeast, serving over 240,000 customers in 11 states. The company provides energy efficiency solutions, including solar energy systems, to help customers reduce their energy bills.
