LONG BEACH, Calif. - June 30, 2014 - PRLog -- Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Long Beach Alumnae Chapter is the host of the Farwest Regional Conference being held in Long Beach, California, July 17-20, 2014.  This will be the 49th Regional Conference in the Farwest Region and the first time the city of Long Beach has hosted this bi-annual event.  More than 1,000 attendees are expected to grace the city by the beach, celebrating the theme Uncompromising Commitment to Communities: Service, Leadership, and Empowerment.

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is the largest African-American women’s organization in the country.  The organization was founded in 1913 on the campus of Howard University to promote academic excellence; to provide scholarships; to provide support to the underserved; to educate and stimulate participation in the establishment of positive public policy; and to highlight issues and provide solutions for problems in communities. The Farwest Region led by Sandra Phillips Johnson, Regional Director and Ashley Miller, Regional Representative, has meaningfully contributed to the growth, leadership and vitality of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. Affectionately known as the Fabulous Farwest, the region is comprised of nearly 90 chapters located in Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah and Washington; as well as international chapters in Japan (Okinawa and Tokyo) and the Republic of Korea (Seoul).

Farwest Regional Conference Co-Coordinators Adriene Gray and Gwen Coley have worked closely with the members of Long Beach Alumnae Chapter, under the leadership of Clairessa Spencer, Chapter President, for the past couple of years to plan this historic conference.  Conference attendees will attend business meetings, luncheons and workshops, but the foundation of our organization is always serving the community.  The Farwest Region’s public service project focus is Sickle Cell Anemia and in conjunction with the Delta Research and Education Foundation will host a 5k Run/Walk on Saturday, July 19 at Marina Park.  $5000 will be donated to Miller Children’s Hospital Long Beach Jonathan Jaques Children’s Cancer Center. Community members are encouraged to participate.  Registration ends on Thursday, July 17 (http://www.active.com/long-beach-ca/running/races/dref-regional-conference-5k-run-walk-far-west-region-2014).
