The company provides medical billing services to doctors in independent practices in the Chicagoland area. The business has served the Chicagoland market for over twelve years. The medical billing business offered a number of elements attractive to buyers: multi-year contracts, a robust operating infrastructure, and B2B sales in the growing health care market.

The advent of the Affordable Care Act has propelled the medical billing industry into an aggressive acquisition mode. Of the over 2000 medical billing companies in the USA, the majority are small players with fewer than fifty employees and revenues of under four millions dollars. About sixty percent of medical billing companies serve hospitals, thirty percent focus doctors with independent practices and the remainder serve allied providers like chiropractors and nurse practitioners. Our client was desirable because they focus on independent doctors, which under to implementation of the Affordable Care Act, whose practices were anticipated to grow while hospital services will decline as preventative care delivered by doctors’ practices replaces emergency care from hospitals.

As our client was in the highly desirable market of independent doctors, the business attracted a variety of buyers: individuals, strategic acquirers, and competitors. Over two hundred inquiries were made and over thirty people reviewed the confidential business profile. Sun Acquisitions received ten offers on the business. With a variety of buyers vying for the deal, the seller had the opportunity to craft a deal structure that met his needs. Beyond getting over full asking price for the business, the deal closed in less than six months.
