What is Six Sigma? How can Six Sigma Training Help Me?

AMERICAN FORK, Utah - June 26, 2014 - PRLog -- What is Six Sigma?  The first question I ask my students after our introductions in the class is: Can you tell me what Six Sigma is?  I get all kinds of answers.  It’s a quality program.  It’s a formal way to improve products and processes.  It helps to manage the business.  All these responses are true but they are all just a part of the total of what Six Sigma does.

In my mind, after practicing and teaching for many years, I have come to my own conclusion as to what Six Sigma does. Six Sigma can be described four different ways.

First, six sigma is a Business Improvement methodology. Six Sigma tools are used in their entirety to do one thing; to make the practitioner the most knowledgeable person on the planet concerning the product or the processes under study.  Each tool contributes some new or better understanding concerning the customer, market, competition, features, risks, product characteristics and many other aspects of the processes involved, in delivering the product to the customer.  A business decision is not made using one or two facts, but by using a plethora of analysis to determine the best improvement path.  And after management has agreed to that path, Project Management tools are utilized to manage the six sigma project to fruition.

Second Six Sigma is a Metric.  The Metric of Six Sigma is built in two steps, the first is to determine the DPMO (Defects per Million Opportunities), and the calculation of this metric can be done with any sample. It is calculated as, defects divided by opportunities times one million. Example 4 defects out of 6,500 opportunities equals 4 / 6,500 * 1,000,000 = 615 DPMO.  The second step is determine how DPMO relates to the sigma chart. In this example the sigma level would be sigma level 4.  Sigma level 6 has a DPMO of 3.4 or less.

Third Six Sigma is a methodology.  It is a process of understanding and managing customer required features and specifications.  Aligning key business processes to achieve or improve those requirements.  Utilizing rigorous data analysis to maximize the productivity of the process to deliver the product.  And lastly, to drive and maintain improvement to the business on an ongoing basis.  The acronym that is used to describe the process is DMAIC:

D          Define the opportunity

M          Measure the performance

A          Analyze the opportunity

I          improve the performance

C          Control the performance

Fourth Six Sigma is a management system.  Management can use the tools of six sigma in all departments within the organization.  Utilization of metrics allow management to review the productivity and direction of the business.  Six Sigma management is used to measure the quality, at every process step, until the product is delivered to the customer.

For short, when someone asks what Six Sigma is, tell them it is basically four things:

A business improvement tool, a metric, a Methodology, and lastly a Management system.
