LITCHFIELD, Conn. - June 24, 2014 - PRLog -- Join Olivia Judd, this year’s Gunn scholar, as she talks about The Gunnery founder Frederick William Gunn and his relationship with the renowned Beecher family in the 19th century.

The Gunn Scholar program awards one senior each year at The Gunnery the opportunity to spend a year researching, writing and publishing a piece of original history on a topic of his or her choice found within the school archives.  Olivia focused on the giants of the Reform Era, Harriet Beecher Stowe and her brother Henry Ward Beecher, both of whom sent their children to The Gunnery because of Mr. Gunn’s independent views on education.  The three shared common interests, notably the abolition of slavery, religious passion, social advocacy, an emphasis on authenticity and character, and a reverence for family and community.

History has always been a passion of Olivia Judd and as a result of her intensive research and study through the Gunn Scholar program, Olivia has published a book entitled The Beechers and their Favorite Teacher: Reformers All!  Her book can be purchased by emailing Krimskyp@gunnery.org.

Olivia Judd is a Litchfield resident and a graduate of The Gunnery in Washington Depot. This fall, she will be attending Washington College in Maryland.
