VALHALLA, N.Y. - June 24, 2014 - PRLog -- This week, medical experts from Blythedale Children’s Hospital in Westchester County, NY and Alyn Hospital in Jerusalem, Israel conducted a transatlantic video-conference via Skype. The purpose of the collaboration was to examine issues facing ventilator-dependent children and their families as they transition from a hospital setting to home.

Blythedale Children’s Hospital President & CEO Larry Levine and Alyn Hospital Deputy Director-General Eliezer Be'eri, M.D. welcomed attendees on both sides of the Atlantic, and introduced the speakers.

“Blythedale was very pleased to be asked to participate in this important conference,” said Levine. “Our hospitals share a similar mission, patient mix, multi-disciplinary approach to treating the whole child, and core values. This is an important and timely topic, and through this collaboration we are able to learn from each other. I greatly look forward to future collaborations focused on improving the lives of children with complex medical illnesses and disabling conditions.”

Blythedale speakers included the Hospital’s Chief Medical Officer & Chief of Pediatrics, Scott Klein, M.D., M.H.S.A., as well as Chief of Pediatric Pulmonology Milicent Mitchell, M.D., Director of Respiratory Therapy Dawn VanSickle, and Discharge Planning Director Kathryn Scerra. The team tackled issues ranging from the safety of home ventilation and caregiver training, to complex equipment needs and respite care for ventilator-dependent children. The clinical team from Alyn Hospital addressed the management of children with non-invasive ventilation in the home setting.
