FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - June 19, 2014 - PRLog -- It is widely agreed that the Affordable Care Act (ACA) has succeeded in giving health care access to those that were excluded from getting insurance in the past. And that is good. Still, a recent survey estimated that 22% of Broward and Miami-Dade county residents had no health insurance coverage at all.

Enter Direct Primary Coverage, a little known provision of the ACA, that has a growing following on the West Coast of the US, but has yet to be embraced everywhere. The concept is simple: people with no insurance at all, or those in Bronze or Silver ACA plans with large deductibles, enroll at a local physician or clinic, and for a monthly fee, patients get access to medical care that they otherwise would not have.

"When we found out that ACA is encouraging these 'continuing care' models, we immediately knew that this is the kind of medicine we want to incorporate into our practice" says Greg Pittman, clinical director at 1st Care Medical Center, an Urgent Care clinic in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Some patients require more frequent access to primary care than others. "Those with chronic conditions, or those that need continued medical supervision, now have an opportunity to get that access" continues Pittman, whose clinic is already equipped for anything but the most severe and critical illnesses or injuries. "We can take care of 80-90% of a patients primary care needs all right here in one spot. Direct Primary Care is relationship medicine, because we encourage frequent visits and dialogue about lifestyle changes and how to improve a patient's health overall".

Direct Primary Care clinics will typically limit their enrollment, so that patient care is not compromised. "This is a brand new approach to healthcare" says Pittman "and it has been long overdue. Now, everyone has access to affordable, quality medical care."
