Almstead Tree & Shrub Care Co. Turns 50

PELHAM, N.Y. - June 11, 2014 - PRLog -- Working toward their goal of planting 50 trees in area communities this year, CEO Ken Almstead planted a horsechestnut tree in Wolf Lane Park in Pelham.  This year, in honor of their 50th anniversary, the company will plant 50 trees throughout Westchester County (NY), Fairfield County (CT) and Northern New Jersey.

"Pelham has always been a special place for myself and my company," Almstead notes. "My father founded our company in New Rochelle, and I grew up in Pelham. Pelham has always been a community where people valued trees and nature. We're glad to add another specimen tree for people to enjoy."

After the morning tree planting, arborists and crew members from Almstead hosted a "Kids Climbing Station" at the Pelham Street Fair. Over 500 children donned climbing harnesses and hard hats and safely climbed (or were hoisted) into the tree canopy. The climbing station has become a signature activity for Almstead Tree & Shrub Care, and has been a big hit at events at Wave Hill Public Garden and the Norwalk Tree Festival, among others.

"We do this because it's fun," said Almstead. "Most kids are eager to try it. We're introducing the younger generation to the magic of entering the tree canopy. When they're done, they receive "Junior Arborist" badges from us." The company sponsors the activity as part of their tradition of giving back to the communities that have helped them grow. "People are often surprised that the climbing station is free," says Almstead. "They want to hire us for their brithday parties!"
