LGBT Activist Maurice Tomlinson Fights Jamaica’s “Abominable Crime” Law

Pulitzer funded documentary “The Abominable Crime” will be available on DVD on 6/10.

WARREN, N.J. - June 4, 2014 - PRLog -- In 2014, Jamaica still enforces an anti-sodomy law and fosters a culture of homophobia and anti-gay violence. “The Abominable Crime,” a new documentary produced with funding from the Pulitzer Center for Crisis Reporting, puts a human face to these contemporary struggles.

The documentary depicts four years in the lives of two queer Jamaicans. One of our protagonists, Simone, is a lesbian single mother and the survivor of a brutal anti-gay shooting. Simone is forced to flee her homeland to escape a life in hiding and constant mortal danger. The heartbreaking story of Simone and her daughter Khayla is framed by the story of Maurice Tomlinson, an eminent Jamaican human rights activist who was outed when a Jamaican newspaper publicized his marriage to a Canadian man. The film follows the journeys of these two figures through five different countries as they search for tolerance.

Director Micah Fink intersperses throughout the film interviews with local lawyers, politicians, and clergy, many of whom reveal the extent of intolerance in present day Jamaica.

“The Abominable Crime” will be available on June 10, 2014 on DVD through Passion River Films on Amazon and all major retailers. It will also be available in a special educational edition for use by educators in sociology, women and gender studies, and Caribbean studies classrooms. Further information about ordering the educational edition can be found at http://edu.passionriver.com/the-abominable-crime.html.
