Inland Empire Food Inc. Announces New Legume Cereal Flake
RIVERSIDE, CA. June 2, 2014 -- Inland Empire Foods Inc. IEF, a leader in the processing of pulse (legume) industry, announced today that it has entered into an exclusive agreement with LensCulinaris LLC.
The new business will combine and utilize two Inland Empire Foods patents to produce a high quality, dehydrated and ready to eat lentil cereal product. The non-GMO lentil is a natural powerful food providing a long list of health benefits which include; being gluten free, the capacity to reduce cholesterol, high in protein and antioxidants, and is an excellent source of prebiotic and natural fiber. Despite America’s high awareness of fiber’s positive effect on health, consumers have limited knowledge about their own daily fiber consumption targets. The results of the Datamonitor survey show more than half (52%) of active fiber consumers think they are achieving their required daily amount of fiber. However, of that proportion, only a fifth (22%) was able to point out the correct amount of fiber intake¹. Ms. Deshmukh, President and founder of LensCulinaris recognized this misconception many years ago and through her dietician practice began a quest to educate her patients, one at time, on the importance of soluble and non-soluble fiber in the everyday diet.
IEF’s first cereal client and new distribution partner is LensCulinaris, the creator of lentil based therapeutic formulations that enhances and supports women’s health during pre and post pregnancy years, as well as therapeutic lentil meals for the entire family. IEF, with the help of LensCulinaris, will be investing heavily into promoting its dehydrated lentil as an added value ingredient for the cereal, granola, and bar segment.
Mark Sterner, President and Co-Founder of Inland Empire Foods Inc., stated, "Inland is continuously seeking new innovative ways to bring the highly nutritious legume to the American dinner table and with the input from our new nutritionist partner Deepa Deshmukh, President and Founder of LensCulinaris, we believe to have found just that. “At first, Ms. Deshmukh’s idea of introducing lentils into the breakfast segment struck me as strange but the more I listened, the more I began to see the endless possibilities.”
In addition to the natural non-GMO legume flake, through some extensive R&D, LensCulinaris and IEF created the Power Pulse Flake©, a lentil infused with the therapeutic spice turmeric and the natural soluble inulin fiber, which is extracted from the root of the chicory plant. The flake comes in various forms, offering many possibilities as an innovative naturally nutritious ingredient.
Mr. Sterner also added, "We look forward to providing top quality innovative legume ingredients to clients in the cereal, granola and bar industries both in the United States and internationally. Lentils and related legumes such as beans are currently used in snack goods, pastas and other food applications and introducing them into the breakfast segment will significantly broaden their overall appeal.”
