Laundry Tips to Extend the Life of Your Clothes

JOHANNESBURG - May 29, 2014 - PRLog -- When it comes to washing garments the general routine is to wear an item, put it into a laundry basket, scoop it out and throw it into the washing machine. What one often doesn’t consider is that a small change in routine when it comes to washing clothes can easily assist in extending the garment’s ’lifespan’.

“Consumers can give their wardrobe a new lease on life by considering the actual washing process. This will prevent clothes from becoming prematurely ‘worn out’,” explains Rajan Gungiah, Business Leader for Digital Appliances at Samsung Electronics SA.

Gungiah highlights the following “need to know” tips for consumers, when caring for their clothing:

Make the right choices

Before an outfit is bought, read the care label carefully and decide if the garment’s washing requirements will suit your lifestyle. For example, if it requires dry-cleaning, will your budget be able to cater for this additional expense or if it requires hand washing, will there be sufficient time?

Choose the right machine with energy star rating in order to prolong the life of clothing as well as to ensure energy efficiency. When purchasing a washing machine select a machine which has special fabric features. The Samsung Eco Bubble Front Loader features a Diamond Drum that protects clothes by delicately moving it along the unique designed drum line. Also the smaller water exit holes prevent the fabrics from getting trapped and consequently being damaged.

It is essential to study the owner’s manual and take the time to get to know the ins and outs of a new washing machine. New appliances have their own requirements for best performance, including maximum load capacity, type of detergent and special settings. A few minutes spent perusing the manual will go a long way toward keeping clothes in peak condition, for longer.

Take a few preventative steps before the machine is loaded

It’s all too tempting to just scoop up all of the dirty clothes scattered among various baskets, hampers, and dark corners in the house and stuff these into the washer, however it pays to take a few minutes to get organised first.

·         Sort it out: Sorting by colour is a common method to keep colours from bleeding onto lighter fabrics. Consider also sorting by fabric, or garment type, to further protect delicate items. For instance, group sturdy fabrics like denim and woven cottons into a separate load so these won’t abrade soft fabrics like washable silk and cotton knits.

·         Zip it up: Reduce the chance of snags by making sure that all zippers are closed, buttons are buttoned, and hooks (especially tiny metal hooks) are fastened. Also, give a quick once-over to all pockets, to make sure that something valuable is not accidentally washed, or that there are no forgotten groceries slips, to-do lists or tissues left behind.

·         Go inside-out: In order to preserve, turn jeans inside out before it is washed. Protect screen-printed T-shirts in the same way to keep their patterns from prematurely fading.

·         Don’t overload: Consult the machine’s owner’s manual for its specific requirements regarding load size. Take care not to overload as it will be hard to shut the washing machine’s door, detergent and water will not effectively penetrate garments and clean the washing.

Starting the machine

Check the manual again and don’t be afraid to refer back to it periodically to make sure the right cycles are selected. Factors such as when to add chlorine bleach or fabric softener during a cycle can all impact on the longevity of clothes.

Gungiah concludes: “By following these guidelines and understanding the laundry process, consumers’ favourite clothes will stay looking new for years to come.”
