How To Choose The Perfect Hair Color For Your Skin Tone

Finding the right hair color to suit your skin tone can be a long process of trial and error. Thankfully, one way of avoiding the ‘error’ part of the process is to consult a professional hair colorist for a consultation.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - June 5, 2014 - PRLog -- Rodney Gentry, the go to color guru of Scottsdale, AZ, explains the advantages of discussing your color options with your stylist:

“Hair color and skin tone is a complex issue. A certain shade can look fabulous on a person with olive skin, while looking awkward on someone with very pale skin, or vice versa. Hair colorists have seen everything over the years, so anyone wishing to change their hair color would be wise to book a consultation and tap into their colorist’s expertise before they take the plunge.”

Based at Sachi Salon & Spa in Arizona, Gentry is an expert in coloring and styling. His personalized service has earned him a widespread reputation, with clients from near and far valuing his advice on how to achieve the perfect color.

When it comes to suiting color to skin tone, Gentry advises his clients to follow a few basic rules. The first is to be comfortable in your own skin. Gaze into the mirror and identify whether your skin is a warm tone or a cool tone. Those with olive and dark skin, and those with fair, freckled skin, tend to have warm tones, while those with light and medium fair skin tend to have cooler tones. Of course, as every individual is different, a personalized consultation is always recommended.

Once you have identified your skin tone, speak to your professional colorist about the perfect shade to complement your natural complexion. Generally speaking, those with warm skin tones will look better with rich brown, reddish brown and golden blonde hair colors. Those with cool skin tones will be ideally suited to pale blonde, dark brown, black and deep red or orange shades for their hair.

Gentry urges clients to consider other factors as well, rather than just skin tone. He explains:

“The client’s eye color and their preferred choices so far as clothing color is concerned all make a difference and should be considered before a hair color is chosen. For example, picking a bright shade of orange for your tresses might not be the most appropriate if you usually dress in red or pink, even if you have the perfect skin tone to carry it off! The right hair color can highlight your complexion and eyes, giving a wonderful glow, so it’s worth making sure you get it right.”

Conversely, the wrong hair color can cause skin to look washed out or blotchy, or can highlight any blemishes on the skin. However, those desperate for a hair color that isn’t recommended for their skin tone need not despair just yet. Highlights provide an excellent means of part-coloring the hair, so even if a full color might not look ideal with your skin tone, it might be that highlights mean you can still have your dream color while not compromising your complexion.

Once the client has identified the perfect color to match their skin tone, Gentry strongly recommends having the color treatment applied professionally. He comments:

“Coloring your hair at home is not known for achieving hugely reliable results. The color on the box may vary slightly from the color that the person using it achieves, depending on the condition of their hair, any previous treatments and how long they leave the color on for. If disappointment is to be avoided, the salon is the only way forward.”

Gentry’s advice is based on years of correcting DIY color jobs that haven’t turned out quite as expected and that clients have then wanted to have professionally corrected. After an extensive career as the go to colorist first of Chicago and then of Scottsdale, Gentry has seen it all when it comes to color.
