May 27, 2014 - PRLog -- Activate 14 and the American Institute of Architects North Carolina chapter (AIA NC) have announced the winning entry in the first annual Activate 14 Design + Build Competition in Raleigh: “Double-Up” by Mike Cincala and Andy Goolsby, intern architects at Weinstein- Friedlein Architects in Carrboro, and Jay Sayner of F.O.R.M. studio and Weinstein-Friedlein Architects.

The project will be celebrated during the first Activate 14 event of the summer, entitled Community Engagement and Placemaking, to be held at the AIA NC Center for Architecture & Design in downtown Raleigh on Saturday, June 14. The event is free and open to the public.

Activate 14 is an annual design competition and summer series intended to “activate conversations with the public about current architecture and design issues shaping our communities,” according to its organizers.

The Design + Build Competition gave emerging architects the opportunity to present innovative structures for a temporary outdoor installation at the AIANC Center, which is located at 14 East Peace Street – hence the name “Activate 14.”

Part banner, part shelter, Double-Up is both a sign for announcing activities at the Center and a space in which to make new activities.

“Double-Up activates 14 East Peace Street. In turn, the structure itself is activated by the people and the elements. This is just what we had hoped for when we wrote the competition,” said architect Frank Harmon, FAIA, a Platinum sponsor for Activate 14 and a member of the jury for the inaugural competition. (For a complete list of all members of the jury, go to http://activate14.com/2014/02/11/lets-meet-the-design-build-competition-jury/)

The project’s structure is made of fabric cut-offs and used lumber that the three designers borrowed from the ReCYCLEry NC, a non-profit organization in Carrboro. At the end of Activate 14, they will return all the materials to the ReCYCLEry.

“Thus, the entire experience is one of borrowing: borrowed materials on borrowed time, making fleeting experiences that will survive in the memories of the participants and, in the reformations of materials, return to the shelves to be used again for something else,” said the design team.

From 11:15 a.m. until 4 p.m. on June 14, a variety of activities will accompany the celebration of the winning project, including speakers and workshops, live music, children’s activities, games, and a silent auction. Food trucks, Big Boss beer, and other vendors will also be on hand. For details about the day’s events, the speakers and workshop topics, go to http://activate14.com/events/105-2/.
