Inventive storytelling brings D-Day alive on the iPad

Perhaps best described as an interactive nonfction story, the new iPad app “D-Day Hour by Hour” is unlike anything else published on the Allied invasion of Normandy 70 years ago

May 26, 2014 - PRLog -- The new app “D-Day Hour by Hour” uses the iPad to deliver a new twist on the story of D- Day—70 years after the liberation of Western Europe began on June 6, 1944.

“D-Day Hour by Hour” lets you browse through each hour of perhaps the most decisive day of World War II, when British and US armies landed more than 150,000 men on the shores of Nazi-occupied France in 24 hours—the greatest amphibious invasion ever attempted.

“If D-Day hadn’t been a success, all of Europe could have been ‘liberated’ by Stalin and governed by communists for decades after World War II. The Cold War could have ended very diferently,” says publisher and history writer Thomas Hebsgaard, owner of Hebs Media.

A great many books, movies, documentaries, memoirs, and websites have been published about D-Day, but “D-Day Hour by Hour” uses the touchscreen to deliver a diferent experience.

“Information about time and space is conveyed via an interactive interface, centered on a timeline and map. You can quickly get an idea of what happened when and where or dive into individual eyewitness accounts, videos, background articles and so on,” explains Thomas Hebsgaard.

He and graphic designer Fredrik Moberg, the man behind the app’s interface, believe that more interactive stories like “D-Day Hour by Hour” will emerge as publishers and users become more familiar with the opportunities ofered by new technology.

“Books, documentaries, movies, and podcasts all require you to begin at the beginning and continue to the end to get the full value of a story,” says Thomas Hebsgaard.

“On the web, you can pick and choose, but that can be frustrating exactly because there is no beginning and no end—just an endless stream of information. This app tries to combine the best of both worlds: the freedom to choose and the satisfaction you get from fnishing a story.”

“D-Day Hour by Hour” is available for the iPad through the Apple App Store.
