Rising Interest in Modular Construction

Modular construction is becoming more and more popular as a more efficient, more cost-effective alternative to traditional site-built construction.

SPANISH FORK, Utah - May 21, 2014 - PRLog -- There’s unprecedented interest in modular construction according to a recent release from Modular Building Institute (MBI).

MBI is reporting increased interest in both multi-family and commercial modular construction projects as more developers, architects and homebuilders look for an alternative building solution for completing construction projects.

“We are seeing an increase in the number of conferences, summits, and shows with a modular construction theme,” said MBI Executive Director To Hardiman in the release. “From for profit conference planners to universities and other trade groups, modular construction is a red hot topic for conferences.”

PCBC in San Francisco in June and the annual International Builders Show held in Las Vegas are just two of many shows, conferences or summits where modular construction is a popular topic. More and more shows including MBI’s annual “World of Modular” Conference are featuring modular construction as part of the schedule.

With discussion increasing around the country, universities and colleges across the United States and Canada are increasing the amount of instruction they offer to architects, engineering and construction management students about modular construction. The MBI continues to work to increase education about modular construction through a specific program called “Partners in Education” to help boost awareness in schools throughout North America.

Modular construction has also been identified as a way to improve efficiency and productivity in the building industry. An ad hoc committee appointed by the National Research Council to provide advice for advancing the competiveness and productivity of the U.S. construction industry identified five key breakthroughs.

Modular construction was named as a key to improved efficiency and productivity. The committee stated, “Greater use of prefabrication, preassembly, modularization, and off-site fabrication techniques and processes” was one of the five keys.

The report also stated, “These techniques offer the promise (if used appropriately) of lower project costs, shorter schedules, improved quality, and more efficient use of labor and materials.”
