The Biggest Threat to Mobile Web Design? Boredom
Mobile Web Design is a tough gig and when people ask me how should we design a site, what demographic should they aim at, what is the major key for our design? I give them a simple answer, “Think like a 5 year old” why? A 5 year is easily bored.
Babysitting, parenting both are a massive challenge and the younger the child the harder it is. You think you can say, “Hey just settle and be quiet” to a 5 year old and the well behaved, relaxed genes will activate, and the little bundle of joy will behave like a Buddhist monk whilst you’re on the telephone for that “Important”
It isn’t gunna happen.
Quicker than you can say, “Sugar” they will be restless and be jumping around like a fly in a jar annoying you, pestering you until finally you give up slam the phone and give them what they want which is attention.
Well folks I’m here to tell you that our Mobile customers are 5 years old when it comes to your website.
If you think that customers are going to sit still and be well behaved and read pages and pages of information before they get to the bits they really want? Sooner than later they will be throwing Lego around the room and screaming, “Bored” and move on to the next Business until they get something that lifts them from Bored to, “Hell Yeah”.
Today’s Mobile searches seriously have a mission and its not to read the impressive PDF’s that you spend hours on spell checking, they have a need and desire they want filled and they want it fast.
So how do we grab their attention? Simple, all you need is Colour, excitement and action as 5 year olds really love that stuff.
Make the Mobile colourful so that it garbs people’s attention, make it exciting with a great logo and sliders with great pictures and last but not least? Make it an action site where it’s got buttons and people press them and get the information they need, FAST.
