Tough as Fine Silk: Escape from Beijing is a love story and much more. Its action takes readers along with two young lovers to the heart of historic China. This vibrant tale of love and betrayal takes readers on an exhilarating journey through the byways of this ancient land’s fascinating historical sites.
The story begins when Michael Sorensen, a Californian working as an engineer in Beijing, experiences a frightening encounter on China’s Great Wall. A beautiful Chinese woman, Li Juan, trips on a stairway above him and falls into his arms. If he hadn’t caught her, she could have been killed.
Li Juan is the star performer at a Beijing nightclub, but she leaves the club for a day job to spend more time with Michael. After he comes close to being killed by a hit-and-run driver, Li Juan fears that her former bosses may be responsible for Michael’s accident. The couple flees the city on a train that takes them throughout the historical countryside and beyond to Guangzhou, the southern-most Chinese metropolis, which was planned to be their place of escape.
“Uta Christensen wrote a most fascinating novel, so different from her other books. What impressed me first is her incredible knowledge of China. I learned so much about that part of the world – the historical, cultural and political aspects – through her wonderful and detailed expositions during that long train ride. I wondered whether she followed that route herself when she visited China.” – Gisela Juengling, assistant professor emeritus, University of California
About the Author: Born in Germany, Uta Christensen lived in Ireland, New Zealand, and Australia before settling in California. Holding a B.A. in English and German literature, she taught English at a community college and was an administrative analyst at the University of California.
