By: Air Delights, Inc. With tongue firmly in cheek, Steve Bronson admits business is in the toilet. The owner and CEO of Air Delights, a leading distributor of air fresheners, bathroom automation and plumbing fixtures, has seen his business grow from a small, home-based business into a worldwide enterprise that nets over $5 million in annual sales. Bronson moved from Bremerton, Wash. to Beaverton, Ore. in 1989 to help his brother run a small janitorial service; soon after, he inherited sole proprietorship and looked for additional opportunities to expand the business. He found the answer in air fresheners. "My first year I sold $1000 of air freshener products.... My second year I had $1700 in sales. Soon after customers became harder and harder to find; I ran out of friends and family to sell to. My third year of sales was only $75," Bronson explains. Then a string of events occurred that put Bronson on his current path: He purchased a home computer from Costco, booted it up, and was prompted by a splash screen to sign up for America Online (AOL), which at the time offered 5MB of free Web space. The idea of creating a Web page intrigued him; he thought perhaps placing his existing flyer on the Internet might open up his air freshener business to a wider customer base. "A week later I received an email from someone saying they wanted to buy three cans of air freshener. They sent me a check a few days later and I shipped my first package," Bronson remembers happily. "I was so excited thinking I would not get stuck with a closet full of air fresheners and now had a working plan to get rid of them. I received a few more sales over the next couple of weeks and started to wonder if this might actually be a business." Encouraged by his recent success, Bronson decided to sharpen his skill set by taking courses at the local community college. "After getting an A+ in English 101, I took English 102, Business Administration, and Spanish. If I had not gone to PCC Air Delights would probably not have been successful," By 1995, Steve Bronson no longer had the time to run two businesses, so he sold the janitorial business to concentrate full time on Air Delights. He had moved the small company from his apartment into a small office, and then into a larger house with an ample driveway to allow semi trucks to deliver inventory. "I ran Air Delights from this house in Aloha for five years.... I continued to study computers and software at night, cleaning in the morning, and running Air Delights in the afternoon. I could no longer keep up with the long hours and pressure of running two businesses [and] decided to quit the janitorial business'" Bronson recalls. Since that time, Air Delights has moved into its own 20,000 square foot building and steadily grown into a worldwide distributor of air fresheners, plumbing supplies, and automated restroom accessories. The company works with many of the most well known manufacturers in the industry: Gojo, Rubbermaid, Sloan Valve, and Zurn Water Solutions to name but a few. “We sell everything that you can purchase for a public restroom to be totally hands free,” said office manager Lisa Bronson. Air Delights' clientele is no less distinguished, having outfitted the Dallas Cowboys' locker room and the Ferrari World Theme Park in Abu Dhabi. “It’s kind of a who’s who that shops with us,” Lisa Bronson explains. “We survived (the recession) and increased our sales during that time. We feel very lucky and very blessed.” As Steve Bronson looks to the future, he knows his fortunes still lie on the Internet. He continues to learn as much about upcoming trends and look for new opportunities to expand his share of the industry. "It seems that the Internet is constantly changing; it's difficult to keep up, even harder to know where to concentrate my attention next.
