BANGALORE, India - May 19, 2014 - PRLog -- More than 20,000 employees from leading organizations in the healthcare, IT, and education sectors have signed up for ASHA – an online training program aimed at employee awareness against sexual harassment at the workplace.

The training program is offered by avagmah, India’s leading online education company and has been created to sensitize employees of organizations in accordance with ‘The Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, and Prohibition and Redressal)Act 2013’.

The Act (which became law in December 2013), states that every organization (whether government or private sector), having more than 10 employees, is liable for any incidence of sexual harassment at the workplace, unless the organization has taken steps as defined by the law for ‘Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal’.

Non-compliance will attract penal actions against employers with Senior Management being held personally liable, a fine of Rs, 50,000 or more and cancellation of business license.  The Act recommends various steps to make organizations compliant amongst which is the conduct of workshops and awareness programs for employees.

“Previously, non-availability of tools for employee awareness and sensitization requirements of the Act has been a major constraint that’s thwarted compliance among organizations. ASHA is India’s first e-module that addresses the market need for a comprehensive and flexible awareness program aimed at preventing workplace sexual harassment,” said Karthik KS, avagmah’s Founder & CEO.

“There is a massive gap in the spirit of the law and organizational preparedness in India to deal with the challenges,” said Pankaj Sharma, Chief Trustee of Centre for Transforming India and a leading global expert on the issue of workplace sexual harassment.

Sharma, who has worked with avagmah to design ASHA said that the lack of awareness and understanding is another major impediment to proper implementation. “As per the Act, the “workplace”  is any department, organization, office, branch or unit of the Government (both central and state), any unit, undertaking or unit or enterprise in the private sector including societies, trusts, NGOs, hospitals or nursing homes, sports institute’s stadiums and sports complexes, as well as transportation provided by the employer for undertaking the journey. There are 400 million workers in India both in the organized and unorganized sector. There is an equally large number of students within educational institutions. Having to train such a large universe makes technology the option”.

ASHA is delivered through the avagmah technology platform, providing anywhere-anytime login access to trainees through mobile / laptop, an interactive learner support application similar to WhatsApp for Q&As, checklists and standard formats as well as compliance support to organizations by our SME (subject matter expert). As part of the solution, each employee is given access to online video tutorials with unique username and password. Additionally a corporate master login is made available to compliance managers within the organization.

avagmah aims to train over 100,000 employees on ASHA in 2014 alone.
