LOS ANGELES - May 16, 2014 - PRLog -- If I could do it all over again, would I do it the same way?

You probably don't consciously ask yourself this question every time you take a decision and evaluate the result. Instead, you just move on and continue living your life. That's because we try not to get bogged down in those insignificant decisions we make every day.

The more significant decisions, like major purchases and health choices, matter a whole lot more in the grand scheme of things and our memory can usually serve us well in those cases.

As a parent, we have faced significant decisions. More importantly, perhaps we've made mistakes and you have those experiences to share.

Let's talk about what's coming up around the corner and those significant/insignificant decisions:

Summer time

Summer for children is for swimming, pool time, camping and, generally speaking, doing NOTHING. At least that's the way it was for us when we were kids.

It was great but, I can't deny it, but as an adult I can see that something was missing.

I was missing a "PRODUCTIVE" summer. All this doing nothing was not giving us a complete education because, when you are an adult, life is a tad different. Regardless of the season. And I wish my (very loving) parents thought the same thing.

I consider that summer can be most definitely a time for doing, well, summer activities, but why not tie it up with education, catch-up programs and even some light work?

Children will have a much realistic approach to the future and can be prepared for future life and, when adulthood arrives, have the correct frame of mind which will make things SO much easier for them and their family.

Here is a short list of mistakes and it is meant for parents only as an educational advice.

PLAN A: Short list of mistakes to avoid this summer with your kids

- Let them get go to sleep when they want (and get up when they want) everyday. While it's true that this activity IS somewhat part of a summer, having some discipline is also essential.

- Let them eat junk food (and sugar) when they please: candy, chips, hotdogs, sodas... We surely do not want to develop diabetes, now, do we?

- And we also have the opposite side of the medal: not allow your children to have a fun summer (where they CAN break their schedules a bit AND eat some junk food.

- NOT to plan field trips, family outings, camping etc.: for some parents summer is just any other season to... Work, just like they normally do the rest of the year.

PLAN B: Summer school

The best thing you can do is balance your busy summer life and send your children to a summer school. They can still come home and night, but let the teachers do some of the camping, field trips and a catch-up program to prepare them for the new school year.

This plan is a sure-fire solution for many parents and children alike.

I highly recommend it!
