By: Gauntlet Gallery Meryl Pataky is a San Francisco mixed media and neon artist originally from South Florida. Her work revolves around the nature of existence and the cosmos. Her materials are specifically chosen to represent the elements and building blocks of life. Brock Brake, a Chicago based photographer, moved to San Francisco in 2012. His photography spans many genres from photo-journalism, skateboarding and graffiti documentary, to profiles of artists in their process. The two met in San Francisco and continue to work on projects together. "Played Out" was a neon installation project commissioned by Perrier in 2013 for Miami Project fair during Art Basel week. The repetitive imagery of neon palm trees played with many ideas: the ubiquitous nature of neon in Miami as well as the quintessential imagery of palm trees in the city. The image of a palm tree in the neon industry is considered a cliche. By making the palm trees small and multi-colored, the artist hoped to take back the neon palm tree and make it more modern. 20 trees were installed for the exhibit in Miami and one went around Miami with Meryl and Brock to check out the sites of the town.
