Free Friday Family Funfest

Funfest and basketball tournament benefitting youth obesity and youth sports injuries.

Houston, Texas –– 1 in 3 youth have been medically classified as obese! Today`s youth culture has all but eliminated physical activity. Video game play has been compared to drug addiction.  The researchers say earlier studies have found similar white matter changes in the brain scans of people addicted to alcohol, cocaine, heroin, marijuana and meth. Professor Gunter Schumann, chair in biological psychiatry at the Institute of Psychiatry at King's College, London, told BBC News (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-16505521) that he's come across similar findings in brain scans of video game addicts. Sports injuries among young athletes are on the rise. According to the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), high school athletes account for an estimated 2 million injuries, 500,000 doctor visits and 30,000 hospitalizations every year. From June 20 – 22, 2014, Sports Authority, HARDY & HARDY INC., and THE BALLER ACADEMY have joined forces with The Galena Park Independent School District to promote the importance of youth sport activities and safety.

This event was created to educate athletes, parents, trainers, coaches and health care providers about the rapid increase in youth illnesses and sports injuries. We will bring in supporters and sponsors that will inform our participants of the necessary steps to help reverse the trend and the need to keep young athletes healthy and in the game. The campaign highlights the importance of teaching proper diet and injury prevention techniques. We will be discussing the need for open communication between everyone involved in a young athlete’s life. The after school coach, school coach and athletes doctor must be on the same page as it relates the youths athletic success.
