Stephen Fry launches Petersfield Shakespeare Festival

‘ A marvellous place to see a marvellous thing’ Stephen Fry about The Petersfield Shakespeare Festival at Bedales

PETERSFIELD, U.K. - May 9, 2014 - PRLog -- The 2014 Petersfield Shakespeare Festival, launched this week at Bedales by Stephen Fry, is poised to enter its third season following the phenomenal success of last year’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’ and ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’.

Demand for tickets is already high for this season’s productions of ‘The Merry Wives’ and ‘Macbeth’ at the beautiful and unique open air theatre at Bedales set in front of the historic Sotherington Barn.

The festival will open with ‘The Merry Wives’ directed by Gavin Bruce and Izzy Foley. Ste Johnston will return in triumph after Bottom, as Shakespeare’s fattest and naughtiest knight, Sir John Falstaff, who boozes and bounds his way through the bedrooms and bars of the English countryside. Re-imagined in a Hampshire village in the 1950s, this production is stuffed to the gills with music, laughter and a fondly drawn picture of country life.

‘Macbeth’, directed by David Jackson and Izzy Foley, is Shakespeare’s darkest tragedy and this extraordinary 1930s version promises to be compelling, shocking and quite unforgettable. With a voodoo ju-ju heart and fire, sacrifice and blood, the production slashes open the dark heart of Shakespeare’s most visceral tragedy. You will never have seen a Macbeth like this and as night falls across the performance space, so murder comes to light.

Shakespeare Festival’s Artistic Director Jay Green, said, “We are thrilled Stephen Fry has given us his blessing. This year promises an extraordinary pair of productions featuring West End actors and local favourites. The summer promises to be very special and once the World Cup is finished we look forward to seeing old friends and new in our beautiful outdoor theatre. Come and enjoy our bar and take advantage of our great pizza offers.”

Stephen Fry visited Bedales on 8 May 2014 to address students as part of the school’s Civics talks. He also took the opportunity to meet cast members of the Shakespeare Festival and to launch this season’s productions.
