HOLLYWOOD, Calif. - May 7, 2014 - PRLog -- Love, seduction, decadence and murder. In this world premiere musical adapted from Oscar Wilde’s legendary novel “The Picture of Dorian Gray,” artist Basil Hallward paints a portrait of the exceedingly beautiful and enigmatic Dorian Gray that turns out to be his masterpiece. As Basil and the hedonistic aristocrat Henry Wotton discuss the portrait’s future, Dorian’s inhibitions fall away as if manipulated by an unearthly force.

“It’s a wild, magical and mysterious story, and the themes are so relevant in today’s image-obsessed culture,” says music director and composer Chris Raymond. “The score draws on many influences, including classic Broadway, opera and modern dance music. The large cast provides rich, complex vocal harmonies throughout the show.”

“We stayed very close to the source material in terms of the story and tried to incorporate Wilde’s language wherever possible,” explains writer Marco Gomez, who just received the LA Weekly Award for “Direction of a Musical” for last season’s Dreamgirls. “Our biggest challenge was the internal nature of Dorian’s conflict in the novel, which we needed to open up and dramatize. We created a character, the “Demon,” played by the wonderful Toni Smith, that helps make sense of Dorian’s personality change.”

DOMA Theatre Company has carved a name for itself by presenting large-scale, Broadway-style musicals in a small intimate setting at Hollywood’s MET Theatre. DOMA’s production of Dreamgirls garnered rave reviews including a Los Angeles Times “Critic’s Choice,” was named “Musical of the Year” at the LA Weekly awards, and received multiple Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle awards including “Outstanding Revival.”
